Etymology & History

British slang meaning a very long time, origin uncertain but possibly a modification of 'donkey's years' or from military slang 'yonks' (distances). First recorded in RAF slang in the 1960s, spread to general British usage by the 1970s. Quintessentially British informal time expression.
