Etymology & History

From Middle English 'yoman', possibly from 'young man' or from Old English 'gฤ“a' (district) + 'mann' (man). Historically meant a freeholder farmer below the gentry. The Yeomen of the Guard (Beefeaters) were established in 1485. Modern usage often refers to reliable, steady workers or the Yeomen Warders at the Tower of London.
