Member of the Women's Royal Naval Service (WRNS), from the acronym pronounced as a word. Established 1917 during WWI, disbanded 1919, re-formed 1939 for WWII. The term comes from the small wren bird, chosen as the service's symbol. Wrens were fully integrated into the Royal Navy in 1993.
