British slang for flatulence or intestinal gas, from Old English 'wind'. The verb 'to break wind' is a euphemism dating from the 16th century. British English uses 'wind' more commonly than American 'gas'. Also used in 'get the wind up' (become frightened), separate etymology from naval origins.
