Etymology & History

British pint measure (20 fluid ounces, vs American 16oz), but culturally 'a pint' means a pint of beer. From Old French 'pinte', from Latin 'pincta' (painted mark on container). 'Going for a pint' is fundamental British social invitation. The imperial pint was standardized in 1824, remains standard despite metrication.
