Etymology & History

British term of address (especially Northern England), from Old English 'lufu'. Used for strangers, friends, customers regardless of romantic connection. 'Yes, love' is characteristic British shopkeeper/server speech. More common in North and Midlands than South. Can be used for any gender despite romantic origins.
