Etymology & History

British term for movie, from 'film' (strip of celluloid). While both countries use both words, British typically say 'film', Americans 'movie' (moving picture). 'Going to the pictures' (cinema) to see a film is British. The terminology preference dates to early cinema. British preserve the technical term.
