Etymology & History
Small rented farm, especially in Scotland and northern England, from Old English 'croft' (small enclosed field). Crofting has been a traditional form of land tenure in the Scottish Highlands since medieval times. The Crofters' Act of 1886 protected tenant farmers' rights. Still an important part of Highland Scottish culture.
