The Industrial Revolution began in Britain in the second half of the 18th century and changed how human beings live more comprehensively than anything since farming. Within a century Britain went from a nation of villages to the first urban industrial society on earth.

Why Britain first

A combination of advantages that existed nowhere else at once:

  • Coal — vast, shallow, accessible reserves in Yorkshire, the North East, Lancashire, Wales and Scotland.
  • Water — no part of Britain is far from navigable water, and a canal boom from the 1760s made heavy goods cheap to move.
  • Capital — a developed banking system, and profits from trade and empire available to invest.
  • Markets and raw materials — colonial possessions supplying cotton and buying finished goods. This part is inseparable from the story, and the cotton came substantially from slave plantations.
  • Political stability and a legal system protecting patents.

The machines

Textiles came first. The spinning jenny, the water frame and the spinning mule mechanised thread production; the power loom mechanised weaving. Output multiplied and cottage industry collapsed.

The transforming technology was steam. Newcomen’s engine pumped water from mines; James Watt’s improvements in the 1770s made steam efficient enough to drive machinery anywhere, freeing factories from riverbanks. Iron production was revolutionised by Abraham Darby smelting with coke rather than charcoal at Coalbrookdale, and the world’s first iron bridge was cast there in 1779.

The railways

Steam on rails knitted the country together. The Stockton and Darlington opened in 1825, the Liverpool and Manchester in 1830, and within thirty years Britain had a national network. Standard time was adopted across the country because the railways needed it — before that, towns kept their own local time.

The human cost

Industrial cities grew far faster than sanitation, housing or government could cope with. Manchester’s population grew sixfold in fifty years. Families lived in cellars and back-to-backs; cholera and typhus were endemic; life expectancy in the worst districts fell to around thirty.

Children worked from the age of five or six in mills and mines, and it took a series of Factory Acts across decades to stop it. Working days of fourteen hours were normal.

The resistance was real: the Luddites smashing machinery from 1811, the Peterloo Massacre of 1819 when cavalry charged a reform meeting in Manchester, the Chartists, and the slow growth of trade unions.

What it left

Britain’s industrial regions — the North, the Midlands, South Wales, central Scotland — were built by it and then hollowed out when the industries closed in the 20th century. That sequence explains a great deal about modern British politics, including the geography of the Brexit vote.

Ironbridge Gorge in Shropshire is a UNESCO World Heritage Site and the best place to see where it started.
